"Older" Jet Skis
"I have a jet ski that ran years ago but now it won't start."
We hear this story very often. In many cases it "just" needs the fuel tank drained, carburetors rebuilt or fuel pump replaced, new spark plugs, new fuel lines, fuel filter and a fresh battery. As jet ski enthusiasts we love bringing classic skis back to a reliable working condition for you to enjoy. This is the best case scenario.
But sometimes they need much more diagnosis, parts and labor. A starter, stator, start/ stop switch, cdi, jet pump, steering cable, reverse cable, reverse motor, display, wire harness, exhaust hoses, crank seals and more can go bad while just sitting unused. It can quickly add up. Especially when used, abused, and put away wet. Jet Skis live a demanding life during use and then sit for months or years with humidity under the seat and inside the exhaust.
Most Jet Skis don't hold their value very well over the years. In some cases, engine or other major repairs can cost more than the working condition value of the jet ski itself.
This is the biggest reason why dealerships and most shops won't service older jet skis regardless of condition. We understand this leaves owners of good condition "classic" skis with nowhere to turn. TCS Marine will continue to service Jet Skis from the 1990s on a case by case basis.

They say it's too old, we say it's a classic!
I would be suspicious of a jet ski mechanic who doesn't love the classic 2 stroke models. They were just cooler back in the day, you had to be there. Yamaha Super Jet, Wave Blaster, GP760, 1200, 1200R, 1300R. Kawasaki JS440, JS550, X2, 750SXi, 800SXR, ZXi 1100, Ultra 150, STX-R. Maybe even a Sea Doo here or there.

Preventative Maintenance
Always check your engine oil before using your jet ski. Engine oil needs to be changed yearly or every 50 hours. Use shorter intervals for racing or severe duty conditions.
Check your impeller before and after riding, don't run the engine in less than 3 feet of water. If your impeller has any visible damage it should be repaired or replaced, remember it provides cooling water to the engine and exhaust.
After pulling your jet ski out of the water, start it and rev the engine 3-4 times to clear the water out of the engine and exhaust, do not run the engine longer than 20 seconds. This will help prevent condensation and rust from forming inside your engine.
Keep your battery on a trickle charger if you won't use it for more than 2 weeks. Remove your battery and store it inside over the winter.
If you store your jet ski outside, tilt the nose up and leave the drain plugs out.
